Pokernews Strategy Review

PokerNews Strategy has relaunched, aiming to bring readers top notch poker training through its wide assortment of poker strategy videos. About a year ago, poker news launched their strategy section with a very impressive roster made up of popular poker players including Patrick Antonius, Genius28, MIG, and more. But that was it, these stars released a few video and failed to bring out any new content. A new team has taken over this project and has assured everybody that the new revamped poker news strategy is here to stay. Our Poker News Strategy review will be updated as more videos come out.

Video Variety

Sit-N-Go: 4 Videos
Omaha: 3 Videos
NL Holdem: 6 videos
Limit Holdem: 3 Videos
Tournaments: 29 Videos
Other: 2 Videos
Release Schedule: Will be 1 release a day starting in July
Notes :

Eventually it appears as if Pokernews Strategy will be a mixed bag of poker training videos. They are currently signing up new instructors that specialize in each area to build up the library. No new videos have been released since the middle of June due to the World Series of Poker, but it is expected that new videos will be released at the end of June / early July. The actual video may be somewhat skewed as many of the videos are multi tabling videos where instructors are playing all types of poker games.

Ratings :

Cash Games

NLHE – 6 Max Pro : Nascar_1949, nanonoko, LitleBAstrd Notes :

Currently 1 midstake ($2/4NL) and the rest are all high stakes $5/10 and $25/50NL. Very in depth analysis by both Kane and Randy in these cash videos.

NLHE – Full Ring Pro : Nascar_1949 Notes :

Only high stakes videos so far

NLHE – Headsup Pro : Nascar_1949 Notes :

All high stakes and mixtures with other games

LHE – 6 Max Pro : neverwin Notes :

All limit videos are mid ($3/$6) and high stakes ($10/$20)

Ratings :

Multi Table Tournaments (MTT)

Pro : All. Notes :

Currently the heart of pokernews strategy as the bulk of the videos are for tournaments. The majority are one table replayers and are mid stakes and high stakes.

Ratings :

Sit-N-Go’s (SNG)

Pro : rkrouk Notes :

Currently only 6max Rio Jackpot sitngos (play rio jackpot sngs at Titan Poker). They are midstake ($20) sngs in which the top place wins 3x, 2nd wins 2x, and 3rd gets their $ back. 1000 chip stack so kinda turboish. Contains a pretty funny start to a poker training video as rkrouk is eliminated on the very first hand!

Ratings :

Other Games (Stud, Omaha, Razz, etc.)

Notes :

3 Omaha videos and some mixed game FTOPS tournament videos. There is also a PLO theory video which is very in depth.

Weaknesses

Only being a month old at the time of the review, there is not much of a library, and even puzzling is the lack of any TonyG videos as he is listed as an instructor and of course a pokernews.com owner. This in part is also due to launching during the World Series of Poker where players are more concerned about winning bracelets than recording videos. Also there is no low or micro stake videos which may not be the best of strategies as I would imagine that the majority of pokernews.com visitors do in fact play lower stakes. Perhaps this will change in the future. Also videos from the old strategy section are not available in this library, would have been a nice plus if those were kept in archive and made available to paid subscribers.

Strengths

All the videos are of good production quality (audio and video), and even when viewed on a full screen there is no loss of quality. The instructors are excellent instructors, all hands they involve themselves with are explained in detail and thoughts are revealed fully. While also a weakness with the lack of low limit videos, a strength is that you have instructors playing games in which they are accustomed to. You don’t have pros dropping down levels, trying to figure out how to make money playing low limit games, this is them at levels in which they earn from. In addition there are several new great signings that have been completed but not yet formally announced which will add to the overall content. It is also a goal of pokernews to release a new video each day starting in July 2010 which should expand the video library in no time.

Expected Value: Is PokerNews Strategy worth it?

Should you subscribe yet? Right now the quality is there, the quantity isn’t. There are only mid and high stakes videos in the library right now so those low stake players seeking video tutorials may have to wait until that part is offered. There are signs that pokernews strategy will be a high quality poker training site, especially with more great instructors on the way, but until so a months membership is all you need. A reminder that you have until the end of the WSOP (July ish, not November) for you to subscribe for 1 month without having to pay a signup fee. For $25 there is definately enough content for your money’s worth. Those currently playing at the mid/high stake level should definately give pokernews strategy a shot.
