Exclusive interview with Casey "bigdogpckt5s" Jarzabek of TouranmentPokerEdge

PokerTrainingGuide sat down with top rated online poker pro and lead instructor of the poker training site Tournament Poker Edge Casey "bigdogpckt5s" Jarzabek.

PTG: How did you get started playing poker?
Casey: I got started playing poker after a bad foot injury sliding into 2nd base at a baseball game. I broke my foot in six places and was laid up in bed. I needed three or four operations on my foot and instead of twiddling my thumbs for eight months in bed I took up online poker. The rest is, as they say, history. Best break of my life :).

PTG: How did you get affiliated with TouramentPokerEdge?
Casey: The site founders came to me with a concept of tournament-only training that was more than just pumping out videos. They wanted to build a community for low to midstakes mtt players, both online and for those coming from a recreational live background. A place where they could grow together, led by the established pros like myself and my fellow TPE pros who all have very successful backgrounds. This includes not only videos targeted to their level of play, but theory videos that can help them accelerate the learning process through studying key concepts. They also wanted to create a site that focused on being very responsive to the customer. We’ve already created multiple series based on specific requests from members in our forums and any email gets answered as fast as possible.

PTG: What made you want to start getting into poker training videos?
Casey: I never really yearned to start making vids, but when the guys approached me with this offer, it was laid out so professionally that it got me thinking that maybe it would be something i would enjoy doing. And luckily for me it is.

PTG: What kind of videos can we expect in the future?
Casey: I think the videos we can expect in the future will take training videos on all sites to a new level. With our theory-vid features I think people are going to accelerate their learning curve. Also, at TPE we are really responsive to what our members want, and therefore they will be getting to see what they ask for.

PTG: Do you prefer recording live rail videos or hand replayers?
Casey: Definitely the live play is preferable to me. I think most of the members feel this way too. I just am not always sure that when you do a replayer vid you have all the dynamics that went into every play. I am a guy that chats at a lot of my tables, so I try and work that chat around some of my moves. You don't always see that in a replayer.

PTG: What are your poker goals for this year?  WSOP goals?
Casey: I'm going to try and play as many WSOP events as I can. Unfortunately, thats going to mean a lot of 5 hour flights for me, as I have a couple friends and family getting married in June. My first WSOP session will start June 1st, then I am flying home on the 8th—and thats how it will be for a few weeks. Hopefully I don't struggle to find a rhythm and can get that elusive 1st bracelet.

PTG: What advice would you give an aspiring poker pro?
Casey: I mean, this is a bit of a loaded question, but the biggest thing I tell everyone is follow your instincts. I think instinct is the one thing that sets people apart in poker. I mean if it was just about math then Bill Chen would win a lot more poker tournaments. Stay within your bank roll and follow your instincts and you will probably make out fine.

PTG: Everybody knows your killer mtt skills, do you play cash games at all?
Casey: I do I play 2-7 low triple draw on stars almost every night. I love the game, and its so different and breaks the monotony of playing just mtts. The one thing I don't do though is play mtts and cash at the same time. They are totally different games and I can't seem to get my mind around doing both at once.

PTG: Do you and are you planning on playing any live tournies in Canada?  What is your live tourney schedule like for the rest of the year?
Casey: We do have the Canadian poker tour here. We used to have the WPT in Niagara Falls that I played every year. I am really the typical last minute guy. I literally think I'm going to fly to AC tomorrow to play the Borgata series. So, as for a schedule I definitely don't have one. I want to play more live this year because with the very small sample size I've played live I have great results. I final tabled the last couple WSOP circuit events I played. I got 2nd in a WPT prelim at Foxwoods casino. I won a couple trump classic events at the Taj. So, I think live and me get along. I have a good time at the tables so it works for me. I definitely want to do more of it in the future.

PTG: Where is your favourite poker destination?
Casey: I mean, the easiest for me is AC because its a 45 minute flight, but everyone knows Vegas is where it's at. So I'll play anywhere lol.

Cardrunners is giving away $10,000!

Cardrunners is running a Poker Video Challenge with a total prize pool of $10,000.  The person who submits the best poker training video will take home $5,000 plus the opportunity to become the next cardrunners instructor.  Second Place wins $2,500, Third Place: $1,000, Fourth Place: $500, and Fifth Place: A deluxe poker chip set valued at $175.  Simply visit www.cardrunnersvideochallenge.com and upload your homemade poker training video before July 1st 2010.  A panel of judges will select the 5 finalists and then Cardrunners members will then vote on the order of those 5.

In other Cardrunners news, only a few months after Cole "CTS" South stepped down as a primary instructor with the popular training site, Brian "sbrugby" Townsend has just announced on his blog that he too will leave CR after the completion of a couple more videos.  “CardRunners is still a great business, but it is one that is much more time consuming than I would have imagined. I value the friendships I have created here immensely, but over the previous months, I have started to realize that it is time for me to move on and devote my time to playing poker.”  Stepping down from Card Runners will also cause him to lose his red pro status from Full Tilt.

Hopefully the poker video challenge will produce some poker training stars in the making to replace these great instructors.

Remember that you can get a free subscription to Cardrunners through Full Tilt and the Truly Free Poker Training promotion
